BENEFITS OF JROTC

The AFJROTC program  IS NOT BOOT CAMP NOR COMBAT TRAINING . It is a high school class that focuses on developing decision-making, communication skills, positive attitudes about citizenship, courtesy, respect, and integrity while building self-confidence as a leader. It also offers extracurricular activities like academics, leadership, drill team, and community service projects.

The Cadet Handbook is your guiding light in AFJROTC. All cadets must have a complete and clear understanding of the requirements, standards and policies prescribed for them. While the handbook is directive in nature, the final word on any issue rest with the principal and instructor. We urge you to read this handbook to gain valuable insight into AFJROTC. This handbook covers information that will answer a lot of your questions.

REPLACES PE

Don't like PE? In Texas, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) could be the perfect substitute for physical education (PE) credit.

Higher grades and GPA

There is a positive correlation between GPA and JROTC participation. Typically cadets have better school attendance, are less likely to drop out of high school, have greater engagement in community services, and have an opportunity to enhance their college applications.

Scholarships for college

Historically, studies have shown that JROTC cadets have a 25% better chance of receiving a college ROTC scholarship than the general population. The J-100 AFJROTC Character-in-Leadership Scholarship program provides 100 cadets a full scholarship with benefit.

APPLYING TO COLLEGE

Participation in high school JROTC is appealing to colleges and universities. The dedication and involvement in such a structured program shows that you have leadership skills and are further presented as a respectful person. If the committee had to choose between you and another candidate with the same GPA, who do you think they would consider?

CAN WOMEN BE IN JROTC?

YES! Women have been taking on these opportunities and participating in JROTC programs for over 50 years, since 1973. In fact, female Cadets make up 40% of the Cadet population.

BUT I DON'T WANT TO GO INTO THE MILIARY

That is a common misconception. There is NO commitment to serve in the armed forces if you participate in the high school JROTC program. The JROTC instructors are NOT military recruiters and cadets cannot be drafted into the military. The program aims to develop good citizens and their desires to achieve higher goals after high school. If the cadet is interested in future enlistment, the training will help prepare them for ROTC or the military.

LEADERSHIP SKILLS

JROTC provides exceptional leadership training and other real-world skills often modeled after West Point, Annapolis, and the other service academies. Improving your leadership skills can help you achieve top-level roles within Fortune 500 companies, public service, entrepreneurship, etc., and of course, the military.

LEVELED UP

The rank an Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) member receives when enlisting in the Air Force is two pay grades higher than other enlistees and are automatically enrolled into the Community College of the Air Force to receive college credit toward their associate college degree. Students electing to enter other military service branches may be eligible to do so at one or two pay grades above other enlistees.
